Cybersecurity stalwart Rich Mogull to help business capitalize on cloud security opportunities
Overland Park, KS, April X, 2022 – FireMon, the leading security policy management company that brings risk reduction, change management, and compliance enforcement to enterprise on-premises and cloud infrastructure, has appointed industry veteran Rich Mogull as its Senior Vice-President for Cloud Security.
“A generational shift is underway in how security operations are approached and implemented, driven largely by the increasing number of enterprises adopting cloud-native technologies and architectures. Security teams are adapting to meet the needs of distributed cloud deployments where individual teams manage much of their own networking, identity management, and other core activities since they are no longer limited by the physical constraints of a data center. With the loss of these natural chokepoints, security teams are adopting new technologies like distributed approval, authorization, and alerting/response to reduce risks while minimizing friction. Organizations are at a point where they must use these and other solutions to ensure the safety and integrity of their data and applications,” said Mogull.
Before joining FireMon in his current capacity, Mogull was the Founder and CISO of DisruptOps, a pioneer in cloud security operations. The company was acquired by FireMon in September last year, with Mogull staying on in an advisory capacity. DisruptOps was spun out of Securosis, a leading cloud security research and advisory firm founded by Mogull, and where he still serves as a research advisor, known for their extensive work with organizations like the Cloud Security Alliance and large enterprises.
“Having spent years building up DisruptOps into a full-featured cloud security operations product, the acquisition is resulting in a massive opportunity to positively disrupt the way organizations run security operations in the cloud. Moving into this role not only allows me to continue executing on our vision for DisruptOps, but now we get to play in an expanded arena thanks to the rest of the FireMon product line,” said Mogull.
Prior to founding Securosis and DisruptOps, Mogull was a Research Vice-President at Gartner on the security team, where he also served as Research Co-Chair for the Gartner Security Summit.
“The cloud has upended the traditional, silo-based cybersecurity environment. Today, anybody with a credit card can access thousands of custom networks and servers they can build with a few API calls. Managing risk in this dynamic environment is one of the cornerstones which will drive the future of security operations. Security must manage risks, but leverage capabilities like CI/CD, automation and ClickOps/ChatOps to seamlessly integrate with the new ways developers and administrators work,” added Mogull.
Prior to his career in cybersecurity, Mogull worked or volunteered as a paramedic, firefighter, mountain rescuer, and ski patroller. He is still an active paramedic, and currently serves as a responder on a federal disaster medical team and as a volunteer with an international disaster response organization.
